Life after being diagnosed HIV positive

Submitted by: mahoney01

As we all know, AIDS is not a disease to be trifled with. The disease is extremely dangerous and it has killed millions till date and millions more get infected every minute. But has anyone has every imagined what the patients go through! Imagine the same condition on yourself! What would you go through if you had the same diagnosis? There are several infected people who devastated with the diagnosis have attempted suicide in an attempt to escape the eventual fate and social discrimination. But please remember that it does not have to be like that! AIDS is totally controllable and you can get it under control if you use the medications in the market today. But as soon as you get the diagnosis here are a few things that you can do.

Where do I go after a positive test?
It's not going to be easy but you have to deal with it. AIDS is not as scary as it was two decades ago. At that time there was literally nothing in the market to control the drug and half the world didn't really know what it was even though millions had already been infected. The situation is now very different. For half the people who go in for voluntary testing; the result is expected to be positive and that can be devastating. But with newer and better drugs the current condition is such that patients can expect a larger and better lifespan even after being infected. As soon as you get infected or get a positive test, you have to find yourself an experienced doctor who will be monitoring your case closely.

Choosing your doctor!
You will need a doctor who can help you through different times. You have to remember that AIDS is a constantly evolving condition and you need an experienced doctor who can keep a close eye on the disease and its spread inside your body. You will feel scared and tense and pressured. But that is normal. Remember that you should not continue with any doctor that makes you feel like that it was your fault.

Getting information!
You cannot be isolated in your condition. Scientists are continuing with research to find newer and better medications that can control the disease. It is your duty to read up on the information and make sure that you are updated on what you could use to keep your AIDS under control. There are several clinical trials on all through the year where clinicians test newer and better drugs on AIDS patients. It helps to know that the search for a cure is on.

Whom to tell?
No one other than your medical provider and your immediate family need to know! AIDS is not communicable unless by transfer of body fluids. Any one who lives in close contact with you has a right to know about your condition and no one else.

The decision for your life is in your hands.
